    2019 Ca'Marcanda 'Camarcanda' 97 Pts WA

“Angelo Gaja’s wines, spanning from Piedmont in the far North of Italy to his two Tuscan estates, are showing consistent results and fully integrated production. This is especially true of his beloved Ca’ Marcanda estate in Castagneto Carducci (Bolgheri), the apple of Angelo Gaja’s eye.”
    - Monica Larner

Gaja purchased Camarcanda in 1996 with the focus very much on international varietals. The name of the winery stems from Gaja’s long pursuit to acquire it - The name Ca’ Marcanda is a contraction of the word ca’ (casa), meaning “house,” and marcanda, meaning “long negotiations.” This stems from the 18 arduous meetings it took Angelo to convince the previous owners to sell their property.

Convinced by the fantastic terroir of the estate in the heart of Bolgheri, the qualities of this winery have gone from strength to strength over the years now producing a broad range of wines that are consistently well recognised.

The Ca'Marcanda has two varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, these are fermented and macerated separately for around 15 days. After 12 months of ageing in oak and further 6 months in concrete vessels, they are blended and aged for several months in the bottle before being released.

This is a gorgeous vintage that continues to flesh out beautifully. I added an extra point to my score since the last time I tasted the 2019 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda in order to underline the great potential of this vintage. This wine could legally be a Bolgheri Superiore, but Angelo Gaja prefers not to use qualifying wine terms such as Superiore, Classico or Riserva in his various wine projects spanning from Piedmont to Tuscany to Etna. Semantics aside, this is a gorgeous wine—one of the best made at Ca' Marcanda for sure—with impressive intensity and balance. Dark fruit and blackberry are contrasted against spice, tobacco, grilled rosemary and Mediterranean bramble. The 2019 vintage saw favorable weather conditions and "just the right amount of rain," Gaja says.” 97 Points Monica Larner Wine Advocate Jan 2023

The 2019 Gaja Camarcanda has green, herbaceous, blackberry and strawberry aromas and flavors set in a sumptuous, velvety texture. What an exciting combination of richness and freshness! The wine combines sappy, dark, woodland, forest-floor flavors with a light dusting of creamy oak and just a memory of roasted coffee on the finish. Combining a vivid acidity and very fine tannins with a luxurious, voluptuous texture (without being heavy), it has a supreme drinkability and a beautifully unforced style. 97 Points Susan Hulme, The Wine Independent, Dec 2022
