    2020 Cantenac Brown

    Château Cantenac-Brown, Margaux
GBP 206 IB per case of 6x75cl EP Château Cantenac-Brown is a wine producer located in Margaux, on the left bank of the Gironde river in Bordeaux. It was established in the early 19th Century and was classified as a third growth in the 1855 Classification of the Medoc and Graves. The vineyard was founded over 200 years ago by a Scotsman, John Lewis Brown. This visionary figure selected the best parcels of land: his hard work and high standards were rewarded in 1855 when the Bordeaux Classification ranked Cantenac Brown among the most esteemed vineyards.Today the Château is managed by the French family Le Lous. Tristan Le Lous, an agronomist with a passion for oenology, is very involved in managing the estate, together with José Sanfins, who is inextricably linked with the estate’s modern history. The meeting of this twosome was a pivotal milestone. From his childhood on an island in the Gironde estuary, José Sanfins has inherited a profound sense of the value of working the land and respect for nature. He puts his heart and soul into pursuing excellence for the estate. Tristan Le Lous, born of a family based in Burgundy, discovered Bordeaux when he met his future wife who introduced him to the region’s wines. He has kept this taste for Bordeaux ever since.

The Cantenac Brown vineyard lies across the prestigious Margaux and Cantenac plateaus within the Margaux appellation: 39.5 hectares of gravelly soil and clay-limestone soils, as well as 16 hectares of small gravel plots and 5 hectares of clay-limestone plots. This diversity of terroirs offers a great richness to the blending process and ensures constant quality over several vintages.

The 2020 Cantenac Brown is an outrageously beautiful wine. Ample, vertical and soaring in its intensity, the 2020 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Punchy red berry fruit, lavender, spice, mint and rose petal abound. What I like most about the 2020 is the way it balances fruit intensity with vibrancy and energy. Cantenac Brown is shaping up to be one of the wines of the vintage. 94-97 points Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2020 Cantenac Brown, cropped at 36hl/ha, has quite a precocious bouquet of macerated small black cherries, blueberry, touches of cassis and violet, all very generous and seductive in style. The palate is beautifully balanced and extremely pure, offering succulent ripe tannins, perfectly judged acidity and layers of blueberry, Dorset plum, crushed stone and light graphite notes toward the finish, which has just the right amount of salinity. This is a sophisticated and quite cerebral Margaux in a series of excellent recent releases from the estate. Highly recommended. 94-96 points Neal Martin, Vinous
